Inul Daratista
Inul Daratista is a dangdut singer and performance artist from Pasuruan, East Java, who reshaped the genre's public image in the early 2000s. She began her musical career in a rock band before transitioning to dangdut in 1997, adopting the stage name "Daratista" while "Inul" derived from her childhood nickname "Ainur." She rose to national prominence in 2003 with her signature "goyang ngebor" (drilling dance), a suggestive dancing style that sparked intense controversy among senior dangdut artists and conservative groups. The backlash, rather than diminishing her career, amplified her status as a polarizing figure who challenged dangdut's traditional performance conventions. Her energetic stage presence and bold costuming marked a generational shift in how dangdut artists engaged with audiences in post-Reformasi Indonesia. She has since expanded beyond music into television and business ventures.
