Rhoma Irama
Rhoma Irama is an Indonesian dangdut singer, songwriter, guitarist, and cultural icon of Sundanese descent. Launching his professional career in 1973, he is widely recognized as the King of Dangdut—the figure who elevated the genre from the margins of Indonesian society to the mainstream of national popular culture. Through his label Soneta Records, Rhoma revolutionized dangdut by fusing rock instrumentation, Melayu melodies, and socially conscious, often religious lyrics. Albums such as *Begadang* (1978) and *Darah Muda* (1977) became cultural landmarks, transforming dangdut from a working-class genre into a form of mass expression embraced across class lines. Beyond music, he ventured into politics and starred in dozens of dangdut films that cemented his status as a multimedia phenomenon. Based in Jakarta, Rhoma's influence on Indonesian popular music remains unparalleled across generations.
